The Fast Show 2006 - Report

The first performance and modified car show of the season has got Santa Pod's 40th year off to a flying start!

Although the weather forecast wasn't promising, The Fast Show ran it's full course with minimal interruption from rain on either the test day or the main show day. The Fast Show started early for some with a busy Run What Ya Brung test day on Saturday 25th. Not only was there a great variety of cars present at the test day, but many stayed over to make a full weekend of the most eagerly awaited show on the calendar.

The main day at The Fast Show is the Sunday, and it came with bright sunshine and a huge variety of cars coming through the Santa Pod gates. Everything from 1960's Fords through to the latest supercars were streaming in and it was great to see such a huge range of enthusiast "scenes" represented. The Fast Show is truly a celebration of performance motoring, and mutual respect is given to both classic car enthusiasts and modern modifiers.

The track action kicked off as soon as the track was dry, and again, there was nothing boring about the cars out on the strip. Highlights included stunningly quick 12-second sleeper Corsas, tremendously quick jap drag cars, and national drag racers including the enormously popular turbocharged MG of Jon Webster.

The new Run What Ya Brung classes made keeping track of the action easer and will reappear later in the year at the Redline Rumble.

Off track, the show car paddock filled up quickly with top-quality cars, both classic and modified, and the organisers had a full-on fight about who should take home the trophies for the top-three cars! But in the end, the following were worthy winners of the Autoglym sponsored prizes:

1st Place: Mark Keeble - Ford Escort Cabriolet Stunningly clean and carefully executed. Even the engine bay and underside were worth showing off.

2nd Place: Matt Grocott - Peugeot 205 Dimma Crazy ICE install and stunning paintwork.

3rd Place: Stacy Shackles - Citroen Saxo VTR Perfect pinkie with a great stance and tidy details.

Over at the top end of the pits, the all-new handling circuit was attracting drivers of all sorts of vehicles to have a crack round its evil curves. It soon became apparent that the only way to set a decent time was to get that back-end sliding out! Rear wheel drive cars were going for drift techniques, and front wheel drives were hand-brake turning their way to the top times. No one said it was meant to be easy! Some stunningly good and stunningly bad driving was on display in the handling circuit, but the eventual winners were:

Male: Stuart Braisby, in his Ford Ka, setting a time of 32.07 seconds. Stuart was seen chatting to stunt driver Russ Swift just before the run, which might explain his precise hand-brake turn control and utter disregard for the mileage of his tyres.

Female: Kerri Delo, in her Renault Clio, setting a time of 40.31 seconds. Kerri managed to getting a stunning time out of her poor little Clio, thrashing it around the track on three wheels in a very un-ladylike manner!

The Live Stage at one end of the Show Car Paddock hosted a full day of entertainment, including music, comedy by top comedians Mitch Benn and Windsor, and even a highly unseasonable wet t-shirt competition. Well, we weren't complaining that it was a bit nippy out there, and neither were the girls, who seemed to really be enjoying getting unnecessarily wet. Still, it's important to stay hygienic and take regular showers, even if it is on a stage in front of hundreds of sweating guys.

If that wasn't enough lady-flesh for the day, the pole dance shows in the bar went down well. so to speak.

The action continued until the rain started at 4pm, but by then everyone had had their fill of amazing track action, sexy ladies and incredible show cars. We hope you had a great day out and would like to thank everyone who came for making it a superb show. The Fast Show once again proved to have the best variety and be the best season-opener you could ask for.
